Whose vow can you abide by? You can take a vow of an idol, because an idol has no ownership. You can abide by a vow of a living being, provided he is not the owner of his body, however if he is the owner of his body, you cannot take his vow, because one day he will make you stumble.
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanThe purpose of all these religions is to keep the chit (inner component of knowledge and vision) away from worldly life, so that it remains in a non-worldly state. That is why people keep the chit focused on God’s idol, on chakras (wheels of energy throughout the body); however, it is difficult for it to remain [focused] in one place. People keep the chit [focused] on God’s idol, but that chit does not remain [focused] on God. Nevertheless, as it does not remain in worldly life for that duration, worldly life becomes insipid. Whereas ‘our’ [the Gnani Purush’s] chit actually remains only in God!
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanAs long as the Self has not been realized, worship the idol of the Vitaraag Lord (One who is absolutely free from all attachment). The idol will take you all the way to samkit (attaining the right belief of ‘I am pure Soul’)! The reason for this is that the protecting celestial dieties (shaasan dev-devio) are supporting Them.
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanWhy have idols been established? What is the intention behind this? ‘Sir, You are eternally blissful and I have temporary happiness. I, too, desire eternal bliss.’ God is eternally blissful, that is why even as an idol, He appears more attractive than us. We feel as if we just want to keep looking at Him!
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanWhen we are devotionally viewing God’s idol, what does the idol do at that time? [He says,] “All this value [that we see in God] is not mine; this value indeed belongs to your own pure Soul.” So the idol returns everything back to your pure Soul. This is called indirect worship (paroksh bhakti)!
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanWhat does indirect worship (paroksh bhakti) mean? The One whom you are worshipping, in reality you are not worshipping that One, instead, you are worshipping your own Self! If these idols and temples were not around, then the people of India would never remember God!
Param Pujya Dada BhagwanAs long as one does devotional viewing (darshan) of an idol of God (murti), the state as an embodied form (murtipad) does not go away. When darshan of the amurta (the invisible One, the Self) is done, then work is accomplished.
